This record group contains Ordinances for the City of Savannah from 1863 through 1932. An ordinance is a law set forth by a governmental authority; also known as a municipal regulation. According to the Savannah City Code 1918, all proposed ordinances "shall be made in writing and ... read twice before two regular meetings of [City Council] and seconded" before it was passed. After an ordinance was passed, the document was signed by the Mayor or presiding Chairman and then published. The Mayor also had the authority to revise any ordinance that was passed by the City Council. The documents in this group impact every aspect of local government and citizens' lives. The subjects include streets and lanes, trash can laws, fares for hacks during automobile races, committee meetings to be open to the public, taxes, pensions, regulations for selling food, loitering, licenses, roller skating, contracts, fire and police, statements and assessment rolls, etc.
